Dr. James R. Simpson
Dr. Simpson is Affiliate Professor at the Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and
Public Service, Washington State University. Previously,he was a tenured Full Professor at Ryukoku
University in Kyoto, Japan (1996-2006) where he is now
Professor Emeritus. He is also Professor Emeritus, Food and Resource Economics Department at
the University of Florida. Prior to joining the University of Florida in 1977 he held positions
as President and Senior Economist with InterAmerican Research Associates, working mainly in Costa
Rica; as Cooperative Advisor in Chile with the Cooperative League of the USA (CLUSA); with New
Mexico State University on their Technical Assistance Team in Paraguay; and as Agricultural
Development Economist with Robert Nathan and Associates, a Washington, D.C. based economic
consulting firm.
Professor Simpson is an economist who has specialized in world agriculture, particularly
technical aspects of the animal industry and economic development. In addition to six years of
long-term assignments in Chile, Costa Rica and Paraguay, he has also worked short-term and had
professional visits in over 35 other countries. He has mainly oriented his international research
activities to Japan for the past 25 years, and on China since 1985. His research on China has
mainly focused on long-term food supply and demand projections as well as international implications,
and on grassland economics. Dr. Simpson’s academic activities have increasingly become more
oriented toward human rights issues in WTO negotiations, and cultural aspects in East Asian
conflict resolution.
Professor Simpson is author of nine books, The World's Beef Business (Iowa State University Press,
1982), Livestock Development in Subsaharan Africa: Constraints, Prospects, Policy (Westview Press,
1984), Technological Change in Japan's Beef Industry (Westview Press, 1985), The Economics of
Livestock Systems in Developing Countries: Farm and Project Level Analysis (Westview Press, 1988),
La Economia de Sistemas de Produccion Ganadera en America Latina (Editorial Agropecuaria Latinoamericana,
Inc., 1989), China's Livestock and Related Agriculture: Projections to 2025 (CAB International,
1994) (also in Chinese), and Japan’s Beef Industry: Economics and Technology for the Year 2000
(CAB International,1996) (also in Chinese).

Dr. Simpson is author of more than 400 academic articles and chapters in books, and has presented papers
at numerous national and international conferences. He has done extensive consulting with organizations
such as The World Bank, The Latin American Development Bank, The Asian Development Bank, and the CG
System of International Research Centers as well as private companies and non-profit organizations.
